*Acting Shakespeare is freely adapted from the play, originally compiled and written by Ian McKellen. With special help, we were able to connect with Ian to obtain his blessing for this adaptation. We thank him for creating this stunning piece of theater and are honored he's allowed us to revive it. He is a true man of the theater.”

All the world's a stage…

Four actors, one stage, and a lifetime of work. This freely adapted, 90-minute version of Ian McKellen’s legendary one-man show — reworked for four actors — will unlock Shakespeare’s greatest characters for a new generation of audiences and theater lovers alike.

Acting Shakespeare has been produced and performed through an inclusive lens, taking into consideration how the work could be interpreted by audiences of different racial, economic, and socio backgrounds. We are particularly mindful of those communities of color who have historically been left out of Shakespeare both on and off stage. Through our interpretation and casting, we try to shift the work away from its emphasis on Eurocentricity to a wider worldview. In modernizing some of the language, settings, and stories, we aim to decolonize Shakespeare and welcome everyone in.

“A distinctive theatrical experiment — part autobiography, part classroom lecture, part vaudeville show, along with hefty chunks of Shakespearean poetry and drama.” — The New York Times

Acting Shakespeare is a co-production with our Arts Partner's Irvington Theater and Mercy College.
