DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Macbeth’s story is one of hubristic ambition and the horrible lengths we can be pushed to achieve it. Given the proper context, the script seems to say that anyone could find themselves in the mad pursuit of power, abandoning their morals in the process. And though the kings of medieval Scotland may seem far away to us now, the struggle to balance aspiration and fulfillment is one that continues today.

During the pandemic, many people were told to use the shutdown as a chance to build marketable skills, find ways to give more, and create their own developmental opportunities, despite also dealing with the incredible stress of the crisis. This new, more subtle pressure for accomplishment certainly does not involve prophetic witches or naïve royalty, but we can still learn how to avoid it from Macbeth.

Whether or not they realized it, I believe that this cast and crew have done so, relying on each other’s talents and knowledge to make this show the best it could be. From designers matching lighting with set design to actors discussing character relationships, there has been incredible openness from everyone in the process. They have brought passion, dedication, and joy to every rehearsal and made it truly possible to let this story shine without sacrificing themselves.
