The term Melodrama is derived from “music drama,” and often music was used to derive emotion and explain characters. This uniquely America genre of theatre was produced mainly in the 19th century, becoming wildly popular after 1840.
The Melodrama is a simplified universe, where good and evil are embodied in stock characters that are almost stereotypical. The melodrama always includes a heroine, hero, and villain, with good and evil plainly evident in each character.
The Melodrama is a fun form of theatre and a great introduction to those new to the stage. With this young cast, it was a perfect form of theatre to present to you tonight.
The one thing a Melodrama encourages is audience participation. Please feel free to applaud and to boo as you deem necessary (or as the cast requests).
We have had a great time putting together this production for you to enjoy! As a different form of theatre than you may have experienced before, enjoy the laughter and the silliness… and hopefully the meal!
