Dear Seussical family,

Children are the most profound treasures with which we are ever entrusted. And as much as we like to think they belong to us, they really don’t. The truth is we have them for a short time. We’re just temporary shepherds doing an impossible job under intolerable circumstances. Like anything worthwhile, there is sorrow and joy. But, oh, don’t the joyful moments make it all worthwhile! Therefore, on behalf of Mrs Bullard, Ms DuMaine and myself, let me sincerely thank you for giving your kids over to our care during Seussical. May tonight be full of amazing, wonderful and joyful moments as you enjoy your child on the stage!

“We’re living through interesting times” may be an understatement given the events of today’s world. But don’t our current events make a coherent and ironic backdrop for Seussical? The themes of this show resonate powerfully in these times of war, of mob madness, of feeling sometimes utterly alone in your intention to do the right thing. Seussical does what theatre does at its best—shows us the absolute silliness of our maniacal and destructive seriousness. What a wonderful, whimsical package for wisdom: that imagination makes life worth living; that beauty comes from who you are and not how you look; and that light and love will always prevail over darkness and fear.

I hope Horton’s tale touches you as it does me. In a very true sense, we are all “alone in the universe.” But, if we’re true to our deepest sense of right and wrong, if we are “faithful one hundred percent” even when everyone’s calling us the “biggest blame fool” then “anything’s possible!”
