A Higher Place In Heaven - January 12 - January 28, 2024

Highlands Little Theatre

 Director's Note

I have been in love with Pamela Parker’s ‘A Higher Place In Heaven’ since I was gifted the opportunity to play the part of ‘Son’ in Highlands Lakeside Theatre’s production in our black box theatre. It was one of the finest theatre experiences of my life – not for the opportunity to perform – but for the opportunity to be part of a work with such heart that audiences are left with no choice but to go home thinking.

‘A Higher Place in Heaven’ is a journey that explores what family means.

Set amid the racism the intolerance, bigotry, and intolerance of the 1920s deep south, the play chronicles the Simpson and Madison families as they are forced to examine the themes of love, tolerance, and acceptance.

The production’s cast is nothing short of a magnificent cast – of but one is making their first journey on stage in a non-musical role. Their actions are further accented by an original score by the ever-talented Gary Johnson, and vocal performance by Angie Saunders.

Our magic extends beyond the performances by our actors and musicians. The team of Rhonda Wilson, Mike McMillian, and Hannah Summer gifted the production with their immense talents to bring to life the glorious oak tree and swing that adorn the stage. It is truly one of the most realistic trees I have seen on this or any other stage.

This journey would not have been possible without the valuable directing partner Elise Short, who will be making her directing debut at HLT in the pavilion this spring. I cannot imagine going through a play without her love, expertise, and support at my side.
