BACKGROUND:
The Addams Family- A New Musical is based on the original Charles Addams cartoons of the Addams Family. It imagines what happens when the Addams Family gets a bit older and has to deal with tougher choices. Wednesday is now at least 21 and Pugsley is an emo teen who has lost his baby fat. The basic concept is similar to the concept used by the old TV show where the Addams are visited by some very "normal" people who are changed by their brief and interesting encounter. We decided to try and put as many callbacks as possible to the old show as we can in the musical.
Originally The Addams Family - A New Musical premiered in 2009 on Broadway and closed in 2011. It was considered a flop for Broadway. However, after it closed, it was edited for a national tour run and several songs were removed while other songs were added in. "Secrets", "Trapped", and "Not Today" are three of the new songs that Andrew Lippa included in the tour. Once the tour concluded, the decision was made to license only the tour version, ensuring that the new songs and the new vision of the story would adhere to what they consided a more successful production. Since it has been allowed to be licensed, Addams Family the Musical has quickly become a staple of regional and hgh school theater with its fun characters and catchy tunes.
