DIRECTOR'S NOTES

As a young child, I was fortunate to have grandparents around me who were eager to share their love of theatre, musicals, and great stories. My Pop loved classical musicals and, as I got older, loved to quiz me on which lyrics came from which show (spoiler alert: it was almost always The Fantasticks!). Grammy was one of the greatest theatre fans I've ever known! She loved sharing her opinions about the shows she saw, both in the local professional theatre in Elmira, NY where she had season tickets, and on Broadway, which she visited as often as she could. I'm sure that it was partly their influence that inspired me to choose the classical musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress for my first musical at Harrison Theatre. I love the cleverness in this script, the intricate and lovely melodies, the fiesty and strong female characters, and the purely entertaining dance routines. I am so incredibly proud of this amazing cast and crew and have had so much fun bringing this show to life. I could not have known when I chose it that I would lose both my grandparents this year, but I know they are with us tonight, tapping their toes and singing along! In the words of the original Princess Winnefred the Woebegone, "I'm so glad we had this time together!" Enjoy!
