Director's Notes for "FLUSH"

First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Juwon for entrusting me with the opportunity to collaborate on this deeply meaningful project. This marks Juwon's debut as a playwright, and I am humbled to have been a part of this journey, offering insights, and creating space for "FLUSH" to come to life.

I'd also like to express my profound appreciation to our exceptional ensemble of cast members. Your trust in me to guide you through the intricate, heartfelt, and at times challenging conversations demanded by a play as truthful as "FLUSH" has been an immense privilege. Your commitment to authenticity and dedication to the characters are the beating heart of this production.

Style and Accessibility: In our staged reading of "FLUSH," we've striven to maintain a singular focus: the story. To enhance the audience's connection with the characters and themes, we have implemented closed captioning, not merely for accessibility but also to encourage a new level of engagement through the text. We believe that the power of theater lies in its capacity to forge connections, and closed captioning facilitates an innovative interaction with the narrative.

Casting: "FLUSH" doesn't explicitly mention the ethnicities of its characters, but we were deliberate in our casting choices. The Pulse nightclub tragedy occurred predominantly because it was a sanctuary for queer individuals, particularly those of brown and black communities. We recognize the importance of reflecting this fact in our portrayal, allowing the play to resonate more deeply with the audience. By intentionally casting actors of diverse backgrounds, we honor the memory of those whose lives were lost and pay tribute to the intersectionality of the queer experience.

Non-linear Narrative: "FLUSH" is not bound by a linear narrative structure, which presents exciting opportunities for creative staging. The music, staging, and pace fluctuate throughout each vignette, reflecting a range of emotions and experiences. We incorporate theatrical and dramatic stage terms to evoke different moods and draw you further into the lives of the characters. The fluidity of the scenes underscores the rich tapestry of emotions and realities explored in the play.

In the spirit of unity and understanding, let us remember that art has the power to provoke conversation, compassion, and change. "FLUSH" is our contribution to that dialogue, a tribute to the lives lost at Pulse, and a celebration of the strength, diversity, and love within the LGBTQ+ community. Thank you for joining us on this journey.

Break a leg,

Christian Alexander
