Why do people tell actors to "break a leg" before a performance?
Wishing a performer good luck before a performance is considered bad luck among many a superstitios theatre folk. Why? The origins of this tradition swirl in mystery. Another mystery is the origin of the saying "break a leg." the more popular belief is that it refers to the extreme knee bending involved in making the deepest of bows during the Elizabeathean Era.
Another meaning of "break a leg" is to make a mighty effort-to break your leg trying. Either wishing the performer a grand performance that results in multiple curtain calls or reminding them to leave it all on the stage, break a leg is a sentiment that carries goodness in its pocket and luck in its heart.
So to all the cast and crew I say...
Break a Leg!
