We, as people, are all part of one big family known as the human race. When we allow divisiveness and hate into our relationships, we ignore the power of how we are all connected in this experience we call life. The solution of breaking down these systemic and institutional barriers of hate is through love. By opening up our hearts, we can only begin to connect with others who have differences.
Hairspray is a story that features multiple kinds of love: the love between a mother and daughter, the love between two high school sweethearts, and the love of oneself regardless of color, shape or size. During the creation of this show, I spent a great deal of time discussing with the students how we can elevate ALL kinds of love within this production, and I hope it shines through in their performance today.
I have been wanting to direct Hairspray for the last five years. Despite the show being a popular favorite among students, this musical comedy features a story that resonates with all high school students. There is no better character to tell this story than Tracy. Tracy is a positive force of energy who sees the good in every single living thing. In the opening number, Good Morning, Baltimore, she lets the audience in on her dream of having the world see "Baltimore and me," meaning ALL of Baltimore and the beauty that it possesses.
Another reason why I selected Hairspray for the spring musical is that I wanted to do a show that reflects the diversity of our student body. We grow as human beings when we learn to accept and celebrate our differences. This cast could not have done this any better.
It isn't easy to put on a show with over ninety students. I am appreciative that I have a mature group of talented and hardworking students that pour all of their energy into the show. I am always amazed at what our young artists can accomplish, and I must thank the student leadership for keeping rehearsals efficient and positive.
I would also like to thank the drama staff and parent volunteers who graciously donated countless hours in helping bring this story to life. I am a firm believer in collaboration, and I love sharing ideas with my team. The creative visions from all areas (costumes, music, choreography, set design, and business relations) complimented each other beautifully, and I am honored to work with such gifted individuals.
I hope you enjoy our production of Hairspray! Thank you so much for supporting the Goochland Drama Department!
