Director's Note
I first heard of RADIUM GIRLS from another high school theatre director five years ago. After reading it, I understood why it has become one of the most widely produced high school plays around the country. The story focuses on the lives of three young woman who worked in the radium plants during the early 1900’s.
In 1926, Radium was a miracle cure, and luminous watches were the latest rage. However, when the girls who painted those watches began to die everything came into question. Our story is an examination of the American Obsession with the pursuit of health and wealth.
The play not only focuses on the tragedy of the women who lost their lives to the Radium companies, but also the company men who put profitted ahead of the protection of their workers. It is our hope that you enjoy our exploration of this tragic time in history. Thank you for coming tonight!
