About Floyd Central Theatre Arts
Floyd Central High School is nestled in the rolling hill of southern Indiana, just outside of Louisville, Kentucky. A public school of 1800 students (not a magnet or Performing Arts school), we are fortunate to be surrounded by a community that values the arts. Our full time Director of Theatre Arts and Technical Director teach a full load of Theatre classes while leading a team of contracted staff from both inside the school and out. We collaborate closely with our award-winning Choral Department as well as our Band and Orchestra programs to produce our musicals. Our program is funded almost entirely through ticket sales, corporate sponsorships, and community donations. Our dedicated parent booster club, The Star Boosters, is a seperate non-profit organization that supports the education of our students. Our sister-school, New Albany High School, has also been a regular on the Festival MainStage.
We consider ourselves a college-preparatory Theatre Arts program, aiming to teach a progressive curriculum in Theatre that caters to both the novice and the scholar. Our department is rooted in collaboration and our students learn to work with a team of adult mentors who guide their process. Our Directing Apprentice program prepares students who are interested in becoming Theatre educators, allowing them to gain teaching and directing experience before leaving high school. We have a close relationship with Actors Theatre of Louisville, allowing our students to create and produce their own original work. Our alumni have worked on Broadway as well as in film, opera, and professional theatre throughout the world. One of our many successful alums, Danny Mefford, recently choreographed the Tony Award winning musicals Dear Evan Hansen and Fun Home as well as NBC’s Rise.
