Jellicle Cats are special cats - they each have three names and are given the opportunity at the annual Jellicle Ball to be reborn to a new life.  Wise Old Deuteronomy, the eldest Jellicle Cat, chooses this cat who will journey to the Heaviside Layer.  Each cat tells its story in hopes of being chosen.  We hear from Jennyanydots (the Old Gumbie Cat), who sleeps during the day but becomes useful at night; Rum Tum Tugger, a curious yet suave cat who the female cats find very attractive; Bustopher Jones, the sophisticated “cat about town;” and Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, professional “cat burglars.”  Grizabella the Glamour Cat, a faded beauty who has turned her back on the Jellicle Cat community and whose uppity ways have alienated her from the rest of the Jellicle Cats, crashes the Ball and begs the cats to let her compete.  Old Deuteronomy is abducted by the henchmen of the evil and villainous Macavity.  But the magical Mr. Mistoffelees miraculously brings Old Deuteronomy back.  Unbeknownst to Grizabella, Old Deuteronomy has heard her cries as she dreams for a second chance.  She is redeemed and chosen as the cat to ascend to the Heaviside Layer to be reborn.
