As long as I can remember, musicals have been a part of my life. My Dad was a huge fan and our house was filled with singing, dancing and ‘Leslie Ann Warren Film Festivals.’ When it comes to the Broadway stage, few shows have had as huge an impact culturally and emotionally as “The Sound of Music.” It certainly has been a staple in my life, and it is so fun to work with this group of people who love this musical, too. My goal with this production is to bring to life the emotional resonance of the story and let the words become the focus. The iconic score that so many of us know by heart becomes new when considered in the context of the story.
In these times of political dissonance, a story about the creeping nature of Fascism and how it effects everyone, divides friends, lovers, and communities is timely. It has strong female characters and parts for many women. In many ways, the show is one of the few from the classic Broadway canon that still resonates in 2019. “The Sound Of Music” reminds us to pray, laugh, be a person of conviction, live our morals and keep singing through it all.
The cast and crew is absolutely wonderful and I’ve made so many friends I hope to keep forever. On behalf of all of us, we are honored to present the 50th Anniversary Season opener. I encourage everyone in the Interior to support this wonderful company in every way required to create beautiful musicals. It takes many hands, many hours and many skills to put a show on and any way you can help is welcome. Audition, build, sew, paint and sing with us. I hope this company and Fairbanks thrive for the next 50 years and we can continue to sing together. Pro tip: climb every mountain until you find your dream!
