MATILDA - November 08 - November 16, 2019

EHS Thespians

 A Note From The Director

"Even if you're little you can do a lot, you mustn't let a little thing like little stop you. If you sit around and let them get on top, you might as well be saying you think that it's okay, and that's not right. And if it's not right, you have to put it right."

The EHS Thespians are proud to present Matilda the Musical. When the rights for this production became available last fall, we knew immediately that we wanted Matilda to be the opening production of our 19-20 season. This show features beautiful music, a full set of engaging and challenging characters, and some fantastic dance numbers!

However, what really excites me about this production is the message underneath all the spectacle. At its heart, Matilda is about the power of stories. It's about an amazing young girl and her classmates who, despite their age and circumstances, take matters into their own hands and discover that their imaginations have the power to change the stories they are told about who they are and what they will become. This is a show about a group of young people who rebel: they pull pranks, they sing, they dance, they step out of line, they speak up, and ultimately, they rewrite the Trunchbull's story and set things right.

For me, the theatre has always been a place where communities gather to tell stories and imagine new worlds together. Our hope tonight is that this show will serve as a reminder that, even when we feel small, if we are willing to speak up and start our own little rebellion, we have the power to do a lot. We have the power to change the stories we tell about ourselves and one another.

After all,

"Nobody else is going to put it right for me, nobody but me is gonna change my story. Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty."
