Notes from the Director:
This production is the show that almost wasn't. We actually were going to do this show around this time a year ago, but the whole world shut down before we could take the stage.
Then, we almost couldn't do it this year due to early restrictions and uncertainties.
I considered several possible other plays before deciding that doing this one would bring some normalcy to a bizarre school year as there were some of last year's cast still interested in performing this particular play. It would provide some closure and accomplishment for them.
The play calls for actors to play many parts. It even provides suggestions for doing this show with just 9 actors. We have almost double that number, but most of them are girls. Despite the title, many of the characters are male. Copyright and licensing prevent altering the gender of the character, so most of the actors are playing a character of a different gender.
It's based on real events. Tells us a tale of corporate greed and strong women who fought when women were not supposed to do such things. It's not a typical light high school production, and the students love it. Who doesn't love a story of the tough underdog taking on the big bad, deep-pocketed corporation?
There are times when, despite my weariness from weeks of long days, physical labor, and worry over countless details, I feel genuinely privileged for my role as director. It's productions like this one that reminds me why I love theatre.
I hope you enjoy the play as much as we have enjoyed putting it together! Thank you for coming to see our show!
