Welcome to Deep Creek Damascus K-8 production of "The Wizard of Oz!" We are so excited to share with you, this timeless musical. Our wonderful cast and crew have worked so hard to be ready to perform this amazing show. Our friends and family volunteers have spent hours creating the beautiful costumes, sets, programs, sound and lighting that make this show truly shine.
The Wizard of Oz began with the success of the film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." MGM started looking for children stories that could be equally popular on screen. In 1938, they bought the rights to the well-known novel, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", written by L. Frank Baum. By 1939, from a collaboration of writers, and many drafts....a script was born.
The show begins on a farm in Kansas with all the hard work and troubles that can come with it. Dorothy is troubled by a mean neighbor who does not like her dog Toto, and takes him away. Dorothy feels like she is a nuisance to her family, and decides to run away. She begins to daydream about a place where "there isn't any trouble."
After a meeting with Professor Marvel, and a tornado....Dorothy finds herself in a magical place, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." There are many characters she meets there, from munchkins, talking scarecrows, witches, to winged monkeys and a great and powerful Wizard of Oz. But, all that Dorothy really wants is to go back home. Despite many obstacles along the way, and just when Dorothy feels all hope is lost, she finds she has had the power to go home all along. In the end, Dorothy finds herself back on her front porch with all of the people she loves and of course, "Toto too."
As you journey along with us "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Follow the Yellow Brick Road"...we hope the music and characters will touch your hearts and help you realize that no matter how far you go, what troubles you may face along the way...there really is "No Place Like Home." We hope you enjoy this magical and fun show!
