Seussical Jr. - November 19

Davenport High School

 End Notes

A Note from Our Director

When selecting our season last May, I wanted to find a show that would not just challenge our Pack Players, but also help create connections. One of the main goals our newly elected officers wanted to meet this year was to ensure that we were indeed building community. Not just within DHS, but as Davenport Nation. I asked myself, “What is a show that can engage and excite those that are young and have yet to be introduced to the Theatre, and at the same time be entertaining and profound for our usual crowd?” The answer…….was Seussical Jr.

Seussical Jr. at the surface level just seems like a fun show with catchy music and a great opportunity for tech. However, when we really look into the message of Seussical it all comes down to, “A Person’s a Person No Matter How Small.” This statement by Horton is something that he is constantly trying to get the other animals of Nool to hear, but because the situation seems completely ridiculous, he gets chastised and almost sent to an insane asylum. Sometimes when we do not understand or empathize with a particular group or individual, it seems like they just don’t fit in. However, it’s not until the smallest of all of the Whos finally finds their voice and comes to the realization that they, too, matter. It’s because of this realization that Jojo, the smallest Who, is able to save their community. This act of courage allowed others to finally see, and to hear.

Here at Davenport High School, we have so many sub-communities made up of Athletes, Choir Kids, Robotics Engineers, and many others that we forget that we are all one PACK. We are all supporting each other and all reaching for the same goal: to be heard. Once we all believe and join in one voice, we can make a difference and can be seen.

So, as you enjoy Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie La Bird, and all the rest of Seussical’s many characters, please listen to what they are singing. No one is “Alone in the Universe.”

Have fun and remember to “Think Far And Wide As You Dare!”

Many blessings,

Mr. Abe Ramirez

The Pack is SEEN. The Pack is HEARD.
