After a one-year hiatus without a live pit or singing, we are all so excited to be returning to musical theater this year with Guys and Dolls. It has not been a year without its challenges, but both the students and musical staff have worked hard to overcome the difficulties that the pandemic has presented. Guys and Dolls is a story of love, loyalty, and gambling in Depression-era New York. Sister Sarah Brown strives to spread goodwill as she battles the charms of gambler, Sky Masterson, while Miss Adelaide laments the lack of commitment from her fiancé, Nathan Detroit. It quickly becomes clear that these guys and dolls' fates are hopelessly intertwined, no matter how they roll the dice…
Frank Loesser's jazzy score is a crowd pleaser with numbers that have withstood the test of time, including the classics “Luck Be A Lady” and “Guys and Dolls.” Considered by many to be the ultimate musical comedy, Guys and Dolls opened on Broadway to unanimous rave reviews and ran for a total of 1,200 performances. The show received eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score. In 1955, Samuel Goldwyn Productions created the film version of the show, starring Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson, Jean Simmons as Sarah Brown, Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit, Vivian Blaine as Miss Adelaide, Stubby Kaye as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in their original Broadway roles. Guys and Dolls continues to remain a timeless classic that owes its endurance to its memorable characters, catchy tunes, and its quintessential American themes of desire, savvy, and self-made luck.
We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to everyone involved in making this production a reality and to everyone here tonight for your support of the arts in our community. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
