Welcome to the CCM production of “Follies”, which was written by the legendary composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim to honor the iconic Florenz Ziegfeld and his Follies.
Ziegfeld’s Follies had their heyday as an annual event and hot-ticket item from 1907 to 1943. Josephine Baker, Fanny Brice, Paulette Goddard and Gypsy Rose Lee were just four of the many trailblazing entertainers whose careers blossomed under Ziegfeld’s genius.
As the PBS series History Detectives points out, “The Broadway musical as we know it would not have been possible without the unique mix of style, sophistication, and sheer spectacle that Florenz Ziegfeld bestowed on the American stage.” (www.pbs.org.opb/historydetectives/feature/ziegfeld-follies/)
The students of the CCM Performing Arts Department shine with a style and dedication all their own. One of the reasons “Follies” was chosen was to give all of the current female students their golden moment alongside their male counterparts. The inclusiveness of this wonderful musical lifts the spirits. Enjoy!
