In The Heights - March 20 - March 22, 2014

Colonial Players

 Notes from the Director

I recently found myself smiling on my drive into a full day rehearsal.  I soon realized that my smile was because we were doing In the Heights as our spring musical.  Since I first saw the show on Broadway in 2009, I have felt a connection to it.   I love the pop style of music, the integration of rap, and the multiple melodied music that represents the hustle and bustle of the city.

The message at the heart of this show is one of community, home, and finding out where you belong.  Our construction of the Washington Heights community on stage has led to a strong community off stage as well.  One of the goals of the Colonial Players is to build a place where each student feels that sense of community, family, and home.  We strive to create an atmosphere of trust and caring, where kids feel safe to express themselves and are free to show who they truly are.  The Colonial Players did that for me when I was at PW and I hope that this feeling is passed on through the generations.

I am thankful for the efforts of all those involved in this production.  The cast and crew have put in countless hours of rehearsal and preparation.  I always say that the students in this program are among the most enjoyable in the school.  I value the time that we spend together and enjoy watching them grow as performers and people.  I would also like to thank the parents who have put hundreds of miles on their cars driving children back and forth to rehearsal.

The staff has provided unlimited creativity and dedication to make this production so wonderful.  I appreciate the talent and time that each member of the staff brings.  I would like to make special note this year to welcome Mr. Eric Scheidly, in the role of Sound Designer, and Mr. Christian Brailsford, in the role of vocal coach, to the staff.  This year, we also bid a fond farewell and owe a deep debt of gratitude to Mr. Steven Hutchins for his many years of service and dedication to the Colonial Players.  Steve will be retiring this year and we wish him well as he will be enjoying some well deserved rest and quality time with his family and grandchildren.

To my family – Carrie, Luke, Lance and Bryce – I feel so lucky to have a family who is so giving of their father and husband as you all continue to support me each year through this process.  I love you all and will be home soon.

Thanks and enjoy the show.
