Welcome to this love letter to musical theatre.
It’s January 1990 and our main character, Jon, is dealing with the pressure and daunting expectations many of us have come to face when approaching life’s milestones: getting married, establishing a career with a well-paying salary, buying
a house in the suburbs . . . It’s almost impossible not to compare where you are
in life with where society expects you to be, and to not hear that tick tick tick
egging you on.
tick, tick… BOOM! acts as a reminder that milestones don’t look the same from one person to the next. For me, working with this incredibly talented, kind, creative, and joyful team, this show has acted as a reminder to not focus on the result, but on the process. As Jon reflects in the song Why, theatre is about the people you have the opportunity to spend the day creating with. After each rehearsal, I found myself leaving with a smile, repeating his line, “What a way to spend the day.”
By the end of this show, I hope you are able to release any stress of expectation or anticipation looming over you, and feel the same sense of relief we see in our hero. Let this be your reminder to bask in the present and to be grateful for each moment—and for the people within them.
Thank you for being here, thank you for being present. Enjoy the show.
