 CITY THEATRE

A NOTE FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MARGARET M. LEDFORD

Welcome to City Theatre’s Summer Shorts: Homegrown Edition! Whether this is your first time at "Shorts" or a long-time patron, this year’s collection will exceed your every expectation. City Theatre, from its inception, has committed to the development of new work through the short play format with a special focus on developing local talent. Homegrown, our playwright development program geared toward writers who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), is the manifestation of those City Theatre values. We are truly lucky and honored that the visionary Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation's CreARTE Grant Program, facilitated by the Miami Foundation, aligned with our goals to uplift and amplify local theatrical voices. This Summer Shorts content would not have been possible without their generous support, as well as the the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. These eight shorts will be just like any other year of Summer Shorts, there will be laughter, a few tears, more laughter, and a whole bunch of fun. What sets this season’s "Shorts" apart from past years are the familiar places around our Magic City, the recognizable faces of our fellow citizens, and the stories that connect us. I hope this year's program strikes you with a sense of pride. A pride that swells in your chest because these clever and brilliant short plays come from our local writers, realized through the vision of local directors and designers, and brought to life by this talented company of Miami actors and interns. That is what makes this year’s Summer Shorts so special, it's HOMEGROWN.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

City Theatre acknowledges the lands and waterways on which we create theatre are ancestral, traditional, and contemporary homelands of sovereign Native Nations. We offer our respect and gratitude to the Seminole, Miccosukee, Taino, and Tequesta people as the original stewards of the land and appreciate the ongoing relationship Indigenous people maintain with the land to this day. It is important to recognize the violence, dispossession, and removal that has scarred this land, as well as the resiliency and strength of Native Nations. This acknowledgment reflects our sincere commitment to recognizing the historical and ongoing legacy of colonialism and honoring Indigenous people everywhere. Learn more about Native lands and the local Nations that still
exist today by visiting native-land.ca. To see how City Theatre is working towards creating social equity in our community, visit citytheatre.com.
