Mission Statement

Brown Working Theatre's goal is to provide a home for any student who is interested in theatre. Whether performing on stage or working behind the scenes (lighting, sound, sets and other aspects of stagecraft and production), students will have the opportunity to participate together in a creative collaboration to "tell the story".

Director's Note

Welcome to The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition, and to the colorful undersea world of Bikini Bottom! This year, over one hundred students came together to make this production happen, and we are so excited to share our hard work with all of you.

In The SpongeBob Musical, we meet familiar characters from the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon in a new heart-warming adventure. When a volcano threatens the citizens of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob is determined to prove that he is more than “just a simple sponge” by saving the day. But as tensions rise in the face of impending doom—with everyone from the villainous Plankton, to the greedy Mr. Krabs, to the overlooked Squidward competing for control—SpongeBob and his friends must race against the clock to save their home. In the end, this musical shows us the value of coming together as a community, especially in times of crisis; that everyone has their own diverse strengths and talents to offer; and that anyone can be a hero.

I have a confession to make: before I chose this musical, I had never seen a single episode of SpongeBob. But when the Broadway musical first opened in 2016, I was impressed by the vibrant and creative interpretation of the cartoon—as well as by the impressive list of collaborators, from legendary musicians like Cyndi Lauper and Stephen Tyler to visionary playwright and director Tina Landau. When I saw a youth production of the musical last year, I was sold. It is a special thing to find a musical that creates so many opportunities for young theatre artists—from the lively ensemble cast of characters to the imaginative possibilities of the set, costumes, props, and more. It has been a joy to bring this musical to life, and we hope you have as much fun watching it as we had making it!
