Note From The Director
When I first started writing The Last Blockbuster, it was during one of the darkest times in my life where I did not see or talk to many people. I went completely off the grid for the first month of 2020. I spent a lot of hours in a lot of days reflecting on change, happiness, and relationships. Writing this show not only became an escape but also therapy. When I finished the first draft, it was the first time I felt proud of myself in a long time. I was able to see daylight. The one thing I promised myself when writing was that this wasn’t about Blockbuster or the love of movies, but about the different life stories and emotions that can occupy any one space. Taking a moment to realize all the things that needed to be right in the world to end up with the people you love. What I hope you can take away from the show is the beauty of being in a room with the people you love which has only magnified more over the past months.
I have to thank Joey, Emily, and Megan for being so patient considering they were cast back in EARLY MARCH. With these three, I knew the moment their auditions ended they were who I wanted and I have waited all lockdown to watch you guys shine and I am so happy that moment is finally here. Thank you to Sammi and Luca for filling in as the roster kept shifting and changing due to COVID. I am forever grateful that you came on no questions asked to help out with this crazy project. David and Annabelle deserve thanks because while they are not in the show tonight, they are still a part of this journey and hold a special place in my heart. Thank you Michale Gribble for finding a way to take the scattered thoughts in my head and make the musical score of my dreams. You are a genius and a friend. Thank you to Max and Al at Hallpass Media for allowing me to use their amazing recording studio for the show. Thank you to the TPS board for believing in this show and one acts as a whole when they very much did not have to. And thank you all for making the time to see (listen? idk) the show and I hope you enjoy!
“So, I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we'll never know most of them. But even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them.”
