Welcome to The Drowsy Chaperone! We are excited to have you here!! The Drowsy Chaperone is a fun musical comedy that centers around a ficticious production. It is set in the "Golden Age" of theatre and is meant to be a parody of shows during that time. Unfortunately, some of the content reflected racial and gender stereotypes that are no longer tollerated in the theatre today. I have always been a firm believer that theatre is an important tool to educate ourselves and others, and in no way was the show intended to offend anyone, but rather to point out these offenses from the past in order to not replicate in the future. The "Man in Chair" helps us to process this, and I hope you will listen to the words he says and find the author's true intent in writing this show. Beyond that, I hope you will see the humor and fun that this show is. The kids and adults involved have worked extremely hard to bring you a quality evening of theatre. I was lucky enough to see the original Broadway cast in 2004 just after it won the Tony Award. It has been on my short list for a few years, and it just felt right with this group. I am so proud of what we have accomplished together.
I am so incredibly lucky to get to do what I do. I have the opportunity to create theater, which I am truly passionate about, to work with fantastic professionals who are at the top of their craft, and to teach these AMAZING students. I sometimes feel overwhelmed by how much I learn from them every day. Theatre has the power to bring people from all walks of life together. I am humbled and grateful for the love that my students show to me and to each other. Seniors, I will miss you so much! Remember the memories you have created here. These are some of the best people you will ever meet and I hope you will cherish your time on the Centennial stage. I wish you nothing but the best of luck in all you do!
To Becky, Sharon, Emily, Kathy, Brice, and Tim: Thank you for always being people that the kids and I can count on. You are fun to be around and make my job (even at the most stressful times) so much better. I appreciate all of the work that you put in behind the scenes to help create this magic.
To all the parents, families, alumni, and volunteers who gave of their own time to make this show happen: We are grateful for your support and willingness to be a part of our greater CHS drama family. Thank you!!
Finally, there are 3 people who sacrifice a great deal to allow me to do this job. They cheer me on at home and keep me going even when I am not exactly at my finest. Their love is the greatest gift I have ever received and my life would not be fulfilled without them. To my husband, Darren, and kids, Conner and Sydney: Thanks for always believing in me! I love you far more than words could ever express and I dedicate this show to you!!
We hope you enjoy the show!
Respectfully,
Kellie McCarty
