Playwright's Notes: Vulnerable

Within the tapestry of a century of Black life, "Vulnerable" stands as a poignant chapter, delving into the complexities of human emotions against the backdrop of the Korean War. As the second installment in a series chronicling Black experiences across the 20th century, this play takes a unique leap into a lesser-explored terrain—highlighting Black American life beyond the nation's borders.

Following the 2022 world premiere of "Elastic Mind" in 1923, which cast a luminous spotlight on the dynamic Black American existence of that era, "Vulnerable" continues this rich narrative exploration. The Korean War serves as an evocative setting, fostering an environment ripe for profound conflict—a canvas upon which the intricacies of human relationships, love, and personal sacrifice unfold.

Set against the backdrop of the Korean conflict, this play delves deep into the clandestine affair between Henry, a dedicated U.S. Military Captain, and Ji-ah, his South Korean lover. Their lives converge in an unexpected twist when betrayal fractures their respective marriages, leaving them adrift in a sea of emotional turmoil.

The bond between Ji-ah and Henry burgeons from a shared pain—each discovering their spouses' infidelity—leading to a friendship that transcends societal norms. Yet, as Henry's departure looms and the echoes of their love resonate, a decision hangs in the balance: will their passionate affair dissipate with the Korean horizon or will it culminate in marriage and a new life across the Pacific?

"Vulnerable" embodies the vibrancy and spirit reminiscent of classic Hollywood cinema. Inspired by timeless films like "Casablanca," "It Happened One Night," "Double Indemnity," and "Singin' in the Rain," this production captures the grandeur, fervor, and raw emotions akin to these cinematic masterpieces

This production symbolizes a bold continuation of the broader narrative arc, allowing audiences to traverse the nuanced terrain of Black American experiences, transcending borders and time periods. The Korean War, serving as a poignant setting, offers a canvas to depict a slice of Black life outside the borders of the United States—an exploration rich in emotional depth and historical resonance.

As we invite you into the world of "Vulnerable," we extend our gratitude for joining us on this profound journey through time, space, and the unyielding complexities of the human heart.
