FROM THE DIRECTOR'S CHAIR
I vividly remember watching the Netflix movie version of The Prom a few years ago. I remember it because it had a profound effect on me.
Rarely, if ever, have I hysterically laughed or uncontrollably wept during any movie, let alone done both during the same movie. On the surface, The Prom seems like any cheerful, bubbly teen musical, but it is so much more than that. Woven between the energetic dance numbers and catchy tunes is a heartfelt message of diversity, friendship, and courage.
There are so many beautiful musical moments in this production, but the true beauty of this musical is contained within the lessons it teaches: lessons of acceptance and empathy, selflessness and generosity, forgiveness and love.
Even further, The Prom is a celebration of the power of theater itself and its ability to bring people of all walks of life together, united in the pursuit of a common goal.
Given my passion for this musical, you can imagine how excited I was when Capital City Productions asked me to direct their production. It has been my privilege to work alongside this talented production team, incredible cast, and hardworking crew to tell this important story.
Everyone involved in this production has careers, school, families, and responsibilities outside of Capital City Productions, but still, we devote hours of our lives to the theater.
There is something so special about bringing a musical to life with your theater family. To paraphrase Principal Hawkins, “That’s why I love the theater. It’s how I escape.”
I sincerely hope our love for each other and for the important message we are sharing can be seen from where you sit, and I hope that it is a bit of an escape for you as well.
