The Wiz - February 06 - February 09, 2025

Brown Deer School District

 Notes from the Production Team

Vance Dahl

Vance Dahl is thrilled to bring The Wiz to life with this bunch of students. We have almost 100 students involved in making this production happen from our Elementary Cast to our Middle School Cast and Crew, to our High School Cast, Crew, and Orchestra! Each and every one of them has been a blessing to this process of bringing Brown Deer's vision of The Wiz to our stage. This reimagining of The Wiz celebrates our own students' joys, courage, curiosities, and the magic of self-discovery through a process that has been a new, refreshing, and at times, challenging journey.

Mr. Dahl is also proud to continue building a dream production team with his Co-Director Ms. Kender! She has been such a tremendous help in so many aspects of bringing this production to life. We almost have the twin telepathy of being able to solve issues or finish tasks the other is thinking about, without words. We have involved so many more people in this massive production and they have been so wonderful to work with. They will all tell you about themselves as you read through the playbill.

Mr. Dahl would like to thank the students, faculty, and parents for their dedication and support, as well as the production team for their hard work and vision. A huge and special thanks to my amazing wife, whose support is my foundation for everything. Our now 2 year old daughter is a wonderful handful! Mr. Dahl hopes you enjoy the show! And to everyone involved, "Y'all Got it!"

Alycia Kender

Ms. Kender is esctatic to share this production with our community. She would venture to guess that The Wiz has been our most requested show.  This year, finally, we have amassed the correct production team, cast, and crew to bring this production to life with the care it deserves.

Ms. Kender has been fortunate to watch many of our upper classman take part in shows since they were the age of our youngest performers.  That is further compounded with the joy and pride that stems from welcoming back two of our alumni, Jeremy and Vic, our production is all the more robust because of their creativity and mentorship.

A big thank you has to go out to Mr. Dahl as a Co-Director.  From the moment Mr. Dahl proposed we set our production in Milwaukee, she knew that this production would be a true collboration of interests and respective talents. A warm welcome to new faces in our team, Sarenide and Ms. Perry.  A thank you to Sarenide for your steadfast focus (and keeping tabs on Bubbz).  Ms. Perry your eye for color, pattern and joy can be seen throughout the costume styling.  Speaking of costuming, Ms. Schmitt you are a wonder with a sewing machine.  Ms. Anwar, where would we be without you to keep us all in line?!  And Brownfield, thanks for being your funky self! A thank you as well to Mr. Pinney, for going above and beyond to take headshots of our entire cast, crew and pit! With a production as large as this, we are thankful for a supportive parent community around us, with a particular shout-out to Jen Hayes and Liz Fox-Oke for stepping up to serve as Parent Coordinators. To the cast, "believe in yourself, as I believe in you!"

Tyler Brownfield

Mr. Brownfield is livin' la vida loca! He can be found leading the pit musicians and all of their shenanigans. He really enjoys broadening the students' performance opportunities by directing the pit. He is most excited to be laying down some tasty and funky beats for BD's interpretation of The Wiz! He and the other pit musicians would take it as a huge compliment if you decided to dance along with our funky jams.

Sandy Schmitt

Ms. Schmitt’s love for sewing has been prevalent in Brown Deer School theater for the past 14 years.  She loves the challenge to produce costumes; from an alligator in Peter Pan to the entire cast of Beauty and the Beast.  Her biggest reward for all of her hours of sewing is to see the excitement on the faces of the students when they try on their costume.  Even more rewarding is to see the show come together with the wonderful performances from our talented student body.
