Synopsis
Orpheus, the central figure in Hadestown: Teen Edition, is an idealistic young musician who is driven by his conviction that music holds the power to restore balance to the world. Along the way, he encounters Hermes, the charismatic narrator who guides him. Orpheus falls deeply in love with Eurydice, a practical but hopeful young woman. Despite their love, life is challenging, especially in a world beset by poverty and hardship. Eurydice faces an agonizing choice between staying with Orpheus or accepting the security offered by Hades, king of the gloomy, industrial underworld where his workers are oppressed and tightly controlled. Lured by the promise of relief from the cold and hunger, Eurydice chooses to go to Hadestown, leaving Orpheus heartbroken.
Determined not to lose her, Orpheus embarks on a dangerous journey to Hadestown to bring her back, singing the haunting but hopeful tune “Wait for Me” as he begins his perilous quest. With his powerful, beautiful music, Orpheus aims to sway Hades and persuade him to free Eurydice. Persephone, Hades’ glamorous but weary queen, sympathizes with Orpheus and yearns for the warmth of the upper world herself.
After finally arriving in Hadestown, Orpheus pleads his case through his moving song, “Epic III,” a tale that speaks of resilience and love. Hades is moved but imposes a daunting condition: Orpheus must lead Eurydice out of Hadestown without looking back to check if she is following him. If he falters and glances back, she will be trapped in Hadestown forever. Orpheus’ faith in love is tested as he faces the challenge set by Hades in the climatic “Doubt Comes In.”
The musical explores the timeless themes of love, trust, hope, and the difficult choices people make when confronted with adversity. Through a blend of jazz, folk, and blues-inspired music, energetic choreography, and emotional storytelling, Hadestown: Teen Edition presents this tragic tale as an unforgettable journey filled with life, resilience, and passion.
