Director's Note
I first saw Barnum in the early 2000's when it was produced by Le Petit. I went back to see that show no less than 5 times during its run. I was spellbound. The music, the colors, the spectacle--I was a sucker for all of its shenanigans. The character of PT Barnum, though, was what really drew me in. The thing about Barnum is not that he's able to convince you that what he's peddling is real; it's that you know you're being hoodwinked, but you go along anyway. It doesn't matter whether it's impossible. The joy is in the believing.
For five years, I have said that for my 5th anniversary, I would put on Barnum, and it would be in the gym. For five years, I've been told by many that it wasn't possible, and that it was too big to pull off. Well, five years have come and gone, and here we are, making the impossible come to life! I guess it never seemed impossible to me because for five years, I've watched these kids do the impossible and reach heights that many would never have believed. As another great showman (Walt Disney) once said, "It's kind of fun to do the impossible."
Enjoy the show, everyone!
