Notes from the Author/Director
Thank you for joining us for the World Premiere of Cracked. The Nutcracker itself has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember, I've been fortunate enough to have performed numerous roles within the ballet and most memorably as the Nutcracker himself. Along the way, I have amassed a robust collection of Nutcrackers from around the world and the music brings back so many wonderful memories and stories. But ultimately, something was missing.
Over the years, I have felt that a new story, with new characters, could and should be told; to encourage a new generation of children and their families to experience this wonderful score. This Ballet and the story idea, taking place in NYC and revolving around Kara, started many years ago in its initial developent. Recently, through our collaboration and partnership with Kristen McGrew, the dancers of the Nomad Contemporary Ballet, and with the added creative support of our daughter Michaela we've been able to bring the story from the page to the stage. The pieces have fallen into place and we've pushed each other to find the right tone and energy for the story and the characters. I cannot thank them enough for their endless passion and hard work. I believe we have done it. I hope you will too!
Creating Kara's unique journey and revisiting Clara's story has been tremendously exciting and rewarding. It's a story about finding your way, becoming who you are meant to be and for some its about finding the courage to be more than they seem. These are characters you will root for and fall in love with, and along the way we hope you will feel a real connection to them as people as well. The story is full of magic, mystery and romance. With all the new characters, twists and turns it will surely keep you on the edge of your seat the whole way through!
In the end, finding a vehicle to bring the arts to a new audience has been our main goal. We hope that Cracked touches your heart, lifts your spirits and becomes an annual event you choose to share with your family and friends for generations!
I personally wish to thank my family for all of their support and guidance - without their strength and belief in the project, we wouldn't be here. I'm truly fortunate.
