Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, who envisioned a public high school for gifted arts students, founded the High School of Music & Art in 1936 and The School of Performing Arts in 1948. Both were the first high schools of their kind in the country. In September 1984, the two schools combined to form Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. The school remains a model for the entire world!
ABOUT ALUMNI & FRIENDS (A&F)
Established in 1983, Alumni & Friends’ inspiring community raises funds to provide vital support to the school and its students. Through need-based scholarships, merit awards, private lessons, master classes, as well as grants to each studio department, contributions help to ensure that students can pursue their talents regardless of their financial situation and school budget cuts. A&F assists with reunions, and keeps our talented pool of alumni connected with each other and this incredible and unique school of the arts.
