Thoroughly Modern Millie - February 23 - February 25, 2017

Whittier Christian High School

 End Notes

Thoroughly Modern Millie is the coming-of-age tale of young Millie Dillmount, who comes to NYC determined to be a “modern", a woman in control of her destiny who marries for money instead of love. In pursuit of her goal, she is gradually thrown off course and, ultimately, swept off her feet completely. She discovers that everything she had believed and everything she had strived for was wrong.

I’ve often felt like this as a Christian navigating my way through life. I have fixed my eyes and heart on things that the world declares are true only to be reminded, sometimes gently and other times abruptly, by my Heavenly Father of His absolute truth. How often have I let what the media tells me dictate my own self worth? When have I let the lure of money or fame convince me that I am achieving or falling short of success? How has a “me” centered attitude distracted me from serving others and unselfishly loving God?

To me, Thoroughly Modern Millie serves as a great example of the power of popular thought, the importance of a well-placed word of wisdom, and the value of the conviction to “go against the flow.” A timeless reminder that I can’t seem to hear enough. It has been refreshing to marinate in these thoughts over the course of the production process.

Working on this show has been both a whirlwind experience and an utterly sweet process every step of the way. It has been wonderful to work on one of my favorite shows with such a spirited and talented cast. I feel extraordinarily blessed to work in a Christ-loving community every day and have the opportunity to utilize the art I’m passionate about to worship God! It doesn’t get any better than that.

Thank you for being here tonight. Thank you for being a patron of the arts. Thank you for being a part of the journey of this show. And thank you for embarking on this journey with Millie Dillmount. May she encourage us all in our own journeys….
