Arsenic and Old Lace - October 04 - October 05, 2018

Sullivan High School Missouri

 Director's Note

I’ve been at a loss as what to write for this note, sadly the purpose of our show came with much too steep a price.

This season we will be asking ourselves, ‘What makes a monster and what makes a man?’ not only in the ways that our characters experience in the shows but also how we handle situations in our own lives.  Some things are easy to decide which side of us comes to light, some things are much harder for us to choose. When we are under stress, lack of sleep, overwhelmed, angry, and the worst...sudden loss we must decide if we take the easy route and let loose the monster or do we decide to keep the face of the man?

Since my arrival to Sullivan School District, I have been welcomed with open arms not just from the staff and faculty but also from the students, families and community members.  Never before have I encountered such a loving and close knit community that there can be no other word to describe it other than family.

A few weeks ago, this family was tested.  The monster could have been set free so easily.  This family could have turned against each other and shut out the world, not letting anyone in but also not allowing the hurt to leave.  However, each member of this family chose to keep the face of the man. They turned inward and held each other close. They took deep breaths, offered help and became an even closer unit than before.  This was a time of hurt and heartache but it was also a time of love and caring.

It was quite magical to see the students taking care of each other, seeing staff and faculty going out of their way to offer aid, but also seeing the outreach and care from our neighbor schools.  For us personally, this meant that the directors of Union High School and St. Francis Borgia High School coming out along with students from Borgia to offer us a hand to make up for lost days. We could not have created this show without them.

We could not be telling a better story to celebrate family than Arsenic and Old Lace!  The characters teach us not only the clear lesson that things and people are not always as they appear to be, but also the lesson of love.  The love Elaine has for her fiance even though he may not be acting like himself these days. The love the aunts hold for their nephews and vice versa.  The love that Mortimer holds for his family.

We celebrate our Sullivan family and our own families tonight as we embark on an evening of laughs, scares and love! ~This show is for you!
