Water by the Spoonful - January 08 - January 17, 2016

South Bend Civic Theatre

Notes from the Artistic Team (cont.)

This type of decision will vary from show to show, based on the playwright’s construction of the script, the actors that audition, and the artistic vision of the director. This practice furthers the SBCT mission to "enrich our community with live theatre" when we bravely tell stories focusing on our diverse artistic community. In fact, in doing so, we cultivate our future connections in both audience and casting. Thank you again for your support of South Bend Civic Theatre and enjoy the show!

Mark Abram-Copenhaver

Artistic Director

Water by the Spoonful is the second play in a trilogy by Quiara Alegría  Hudes. These three plays follow Elliot to Iraq and back, and they artfully chronicle his development as a man, a U.S. Marine, and as a family member. That being said, our production of Water by the Spoonful does not focus on Elliot’s journey. I chose not to zero in on the story of the veteran, or in the Ortiz family dynamic, but in a broader, more accessible, and still relevant lens. My vision for this production highlights the necessity and challenges to connect with others in the 21st century.

As for myself, I believe it is important to share that I am a proud Navy veteran (Hooyah, Rickover!) who was honorably discharged for a service-connected disability, and furthermore, I have had my bouts with addiction during and since my enlistment, much in part to my experiences while I was serving. So you can imagine that this story is very personal to me, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to share it with all of you.

To echo the remarks of our Artistic Director, yes, I acknowledge that I chose to cast actors that may not appear to be what some may expect in certain roles, but in my goal to present themes of connection, isolation, and multiple levels of interpersonal dynamics, I have been blessed to collaborate with these fine artists.

I’d like to extend a grand “thank you” to Mark Abram-Copenhaver and the team here at SBCT for this opportunity to direct this powerful show here. Thank you to the actors and designers who took a leap of faith with me on this journey, sharing their art and themselves with this production. Special thanks to Julia, Jeremy, Melody, and last but definitely not least, April. And of course, thank you to YOU for supporting SBCT and coming to see this show!
