I have been volunteering at Gigi’s since 2012 in a variety of roles. Being approached about directing the first Portal Theater production with Gateway Performing Arts Studio's being partnered with Gigi's was such an honor. Gigi's is a place I have formed so many wonderful relationships with amazing individuals with Down Syndrome who have changed my outlook on life to be so much more positive. Wizard of Oz is a special show to kick off this program with because it tells the story of four hopeful youths in search of something to fulfill their biggest dreams and desires. With the help of each other and a very insightful young witch, they learn the importance of being true to themselves and the power of friendship. Unlike the typical story of Wizard of Oz, I chose to approach the show as a more play-pretend picture; All children have dreams of some fantastical place they can go to utilize their greatest strengths and gain power from new perspectives, and I wanted to capture the dreams of all little ones who would love to fly over the rainbow by bringing Dorothy’s dream to life through a few simple illustrations and a whole lot of imagination. Gigi’s is a place where individuals with Down Syndrome are able to fly over their rainbow and be treated like any kid with dreams and I am so proud to be a part of the organization as well as each of these actors and actresses as they’ve come so far from the first rehearsal and now light up the stage before your very eyes who’ve taught me that there really is no place like home.
