Every season, my goal is to present a well-balanced selection of plays and musicals that offer something for everyone. The season opener should set the tone for the high-quality work patrons can expect throughout the year. Our first offering in this 2018-19 season, is not only a family comedy with broad appeal, but a contemporary play written in 2015. I personally describe the show as the lovechild of Steel Magnolias and Sordid Lives. Southern Fried Funeral is peppered with sassy one-liners, silly antics, heartfelt moments and most of all real topics we can all relate to.
The playwrighting team of Osborn and Eppler have created a wonderful play that gracefully addresses how family, friends and distant relatives deal with death...and funerals! We made great effort to make display a realistic family dynamic and added many comedic and heartfelt elements that make the show rich with detail. Even though the Frye family is from rural Mississippi, you will definitely find something to relate to. After all, we all have families and we all have to face difficult challenges -it is how we cope and work together through adversity that makes us beautifully resilient as humans.
