The View from Here - September 16

 Director's Notes

Two years ago, while on vacation with my wife, I walked through a secluded cemetery in the Presidio of San Francisco. The headstones were pearl white and meticulously cared for by a very diligent grounds crew. What struck me was that most of these stones were for veterans of two world wars, and they all face west towards the Golden Gate Bridge. It was quite a view.

My wife looked at me and said, “You have that look in your eye.” She knew. I knew I was on to something. An idea for a film had already begun to take root and the more we walked around that great city, the more excited we got at the prospect of shooting our next film there.

We had no idea that we would be back in San Francisco just a few short months from then, as production on “The View from Here” got underway. That became par for the course as the entire film has gone so quickly. As we prep this film for its world wide release I can’t help but be overwhelmed with gratitude at my good fortune in the team on this film coming through in such a big way. From top to bottom, everybody gave it their all, and it shows.

The story of Mark and Gillian is the story of all of the relationships we have. They are never perfect, and they rarely feel safe from struggle. But we keep trying because it matters to us. Above all, I think we captured the essence of the feelings I felt while walking through that cemetery with my wife. Life is about love and loss.  Relationships flourish and they sometimes fade away. This is a film for anyone who has ever felt like closure doesn’t come overnight. This is a film for people who are still trying to be their best selves. This is a film for you and me. We hope people have a different take on it then we do. Life, after all, is a matter of perspective.
